Beautiful hommage to Roy Hargrove (1969-2018)

On her sixth studio album, saxophonist Susanne Alt returns to her first musical love: acoustic jazz. As an eighteen-year-old student, she traveled from Germany to the Netherlands to further develop at the conservatories of Hilversum and Amsterdam. Over the past twenty years, Alt has managed to secure a place in the musical jungle of the Dutch capital. She has developed her own recognizable, deep, and soulful saxophone sound, whether playing in theaters, in a jazz café, or in a nightclub.

"Royalty For Real" is a tribute to Roy Hargrove (1969-2018). This American trumpeter debuted in 1990 at a young age and was immediately regarded as the savior of jazz. Despite predictions that jazz would become obsolete, Hargrove and his generation contemporaries such as saxophonist Joshua Redman, bassist Christian McBride, and saxophonist Kenny Garrett gave acoustic jazz a new vitality and fresh impulse.

Hargrove’s musical palette was impressive: he played everything from swing to hard bop, but also focused on funk, R&B, and even groovy hip-hop with his band The RH Factor. Despite his physical limitations—he suffered from kidney disease—he rarely missed jam sessions during festivals around the world. Susanne Alt regularly played withHargrove  at the Hague's Bel Air Hotel after the regular concerts at North Sea Jazz. She had great admiration for his improvisational talent and the warm tone of her American colleague, and the shock was immense when Hargrove passed away at the age of 49 in 2018 due to his kidney disease.

Susanne Alt now pays tribute with her album, which she produced herself, in New York with top American musicians. Bassist Gerald Cannon and drummer Willie Jones III played for years in Hargrove’s band and mastered his idiom to perfection. Pianist James Hurt joins in like he never had done otherwise. They play a number of pieces, such as "Roy Allan", a composition Hargrove dedicated to his father, and the beautiful ballad "The Nearness Of You," which the trumpeter loved to play often at his concerts.
