The very productive brothers Michael Brecker (sax) and Randy Brecker (trumpet) made a whole lot of jazz/funk albums under the name "The Brecker Brothers". The Brecker Brothers (wikipedia) were a-list of studio session musicians in the 70's and 80's and also performed with their own bands. Michael Brecker is one of the most perfect saxophonists ever. Because he's so perfect it often seemed that Randy plays less good nd stands in the shadow but it must be stated differently.. Randy Brecker is one of the best trumpet players on this planet but Michael Brecker is one of the best in the universe. Music cannot be measured anyway. And who am I to measure it.. When I just started, Michael Brecker's playing really intimidated me for a long time, technical perfection plus amazing musicality. he really gets down and plays some gritty shit and one second later he plays 32th notes really fast.. As a human saxophone player you just kind of know that you will never be able to play that fast and sculpted. This album is produced by George Duke, Marcus Miller on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, power players united... Here's the opening tune:
So the first time we played the music from Royalty For Real wasn't in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, but in Bengaluru and Mumbai, all the way in India in 2023!Here you'll see me play Au Privave, Classy Cats and Royalty For Real, together with Timothy Banchet (piano), Marius Beets (bass) and Sven Rozier (drums).Au Privave is a well-known blues by Charlie Parker which I often like to start with, almost like a soundcheck tune. Although most of the time a soundcheck is done I found out it's a good idea to play a tune everybody of the band knows very well so we all can get used to the sound of the stage, the presence of the audience and it also gives the sound engineer the chance to adjust microphones last minute. During the soundcheck, the sound of the room is significantly different because of the lack of audience. All that flesh and clothes work a little bit like a totally empty room versus a room with furniture and carpets, if you know what I mean :-)Acoustics are so interesting and full of surprises.. Anyways.. hope you like it! - The very productive brothers Michael Brecker (sax) and Randy Brecker (trumpet) made a whole lot of jazz/funk albums under the name The Brecker Brothers.
