Bass: Susie Saxophone, Saxify, The harder we fight Guitar: Wednesday Funk, Open Up, The harder we fight, Elixir During the next weeks I will write a little bit about the musicians, engineers and others who contributed to Saxify.
I met Lars during the 90’s at Korte Golf, where a famous jam session took place for years. He played mainly guitar and later picked up the bass more and more. We often jammed together but never really talked so much. He grew up in Alkmaar, his father Jimmy was a guitarist and owner of jazz club Birdland. The city of Alkmaar even made Jimmy honorary citizen for his merits for music. Jimmy had 3 sons, Milan (drummer), Lars (guitar, bass) and Danny (bass). So Lars and his brothers grew up surrounded by music and becoming musician was the most logical thing. Lars was really hot in the live music scene and everyone wanted to play with him. He was a busy busy cat! Even Marcus Miller came to check him out (that’s what he told Lars when he came to jam at Korte Golf!). So I am not the only fan of Lars; but except for jamming with him years ago I never had worked with him. Jam sessions are great in connecting with people and creating something in the moment but it’s a pity that it’s only a moment in time and back then there weren’t so many pictures and certainly no recordings, videos.. He’s such a serious musician, always analyzing and trying to find better musical solutions. People often ask him for advice. Lars is one of the best funk players of the Netherlands and I am proud that he plays on my album.
He was invited on stage during a Larry Graham concert:
So the first time we played the music from Royalty For Real wasn't in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, but in Bengaluru and Mumbai, all the way in India in 2023!Here you'll see me play Au Privave, Classy Cats and Royalty For Real, together with Timothy Banchet (piano), Marius Beets (bass) and Sven Rozier (drums).Au Privave is a well-known blues by Charlie Parker which I often like to start with, almost like a soundcheck tune. Although most of the time a soundcheck is done I found out it's a good idea to play a tune everybody of the band knows very well so we all can get used to the sound of the stage, the presence of the audience and it also gives the sound engineer the chance to adjust microphones last minute. During the soundcheck, the sound of the room is significantly different because of the lack of audience. All that flesh and clothes work a little bit like a totally empty room versus a room with furniture and carpets, if you know what I mean :-)Acoustics are so interesting and full of surprises.. Anyways.. hope you like it! - Bass: Susie Saxophone, Saxify, The harder we fightGuitar: Wednesday Funk, Open Up, The harder we fight, Elixir During the next weeks I will write a little bit about the musicians, engineers and others who contributed to Saxify.I met Lars during the 90’s at Korte Golf, where a famous jam session took place for years.
