Last week we celebrated 10 years of our Youtube Channel Venus Tunes, which also would become the name of the label. 300 videos uploaded, worth more than 800.000 views, mostly jazz, funk and house. Most videos are filmed by Robert Glass. How did it start? It all started after this event: We bumped into the James Brown Band by coincidence, july 2006 in Istanbul, jamming with them after the James Brown concert (Parkorman) in Mayotte, a music cafe on Istiklal Caddesi and we didn't have a video camera with us, just some very unusable videos and luckily we made some pictures with the band and with James Brown earlier that day. Unneccessarily to say that it was a burning jam, during absence of a camera the funk was present! We regretted that we didn't have the camera with us! From that moment on the camera and Robert became ONE...
I have many favourites, especially the Bimhuis gigs, touring with Fred Wesley in France, but also performing with George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, playing with dj's... impossible to mention my favourites. Which ones are your favourites?
So the first time we played the music from Royalty For Real wasn't in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, but in Bengaluru and Mumbai, all the way in India in 2023!Here you'll see me play Au Privave, Classy Cats and Royalty For Real, together with Timothy Banchet (piano), Marius Beets (bass) and Sven Rozier (drums).Au Privave is a well-known blues by Charlie Parker which I often like to start with, almost like a soundcheck tune. Although most of the time a soundcheck is done I found out it's a good idea to play a tune everybody of the band knows very well so we all can get used to the sound of the stage, the presence of the audience and it also gives the sound engineer the chance to adjust microphones last minute. During the soundcheck, the sound of the room is significantly different because of the lack of audience. All that flesh and clothes work a little bit like a totally empty room versus a room with furniture and carpets, if you know what I mean :-)Acoustics are so interesting and full of surprises.. Anyways.. hope you like it! - Last week we celebrated 10 years of our Youtube Channel Venus Tunes, which also would become the name of the label. 300 videos uploaded, worth more than 800.000 views, mostly jazz, funk and house.
